An honest review of Mohawk tires: who makes them (and what the brand will not say), the Aegis and Comanche lineup, real stocked sizes and prices, what the UTQG grades mean, and who these tires actually suit.
Table of contents

Mohawk is a brand most drivers meet by price. You search your size, a Mohawk comes up well under the name you recognize, and the fair question follows: what are you giving up? Here is a straight look at the lineup, what the sidewall ratings actually say, and who these tires genuinely suit.

Quick answer

Mohawk is a value brand with two families: Aegis for cars and Comanche for trucks and SUVs. The tires carry normal UTQG ratings and most are sold with a 50,000 mile warranty and road hazard coverage. They suit budget-minded drivers who would rather have new rubber than worn premium tires.

Who makes Mohawk tires?

This is the most searched question about the brand, and the honest answer is that Mohawk does not publish it. The brand's own site describes Mohawk as "a brand built on a legacy of resilience" and lists its models, but it names no parent company and no country of manufacture.

You will see claims online connecting Mohawk to the Mohawk Rubber Company of Akron, Ohio, which Yokohama acquired in 1989. Treat those carefully. We found no documentation tying the current tire line to that company, and the two should not be assumed to be the same business. If knowing the factory behind your tires matters to you, that is a legitimate reason to buy a brand that states it openly.

What can be verified is the product itself: the ratings moulded into the sidewall, the sizes, the construction, and the warranty. That is what the rest of this review is built on.

Aegis Comfort A/S: the budget touring option

This is the cheapest way into a new set here, starting around $40 for a 175/65R14. It targets everyday sedans and compacts, with treadwear grades of 480 to 500 and A grades for both traction and temperature. If you drive a Corolla, a Civic, a Sentra or similar and you want quiet, predictable tires without spending premium money, this is the line that fits.

Aegis Sport A/S: wider fitments and higher speed ratings

The Sport line is the widest part of the range, covering 17 through 24 inch rims and carrying W and Y speed ratings with mostly XL load construction. Treadwear sits at 500 with A-A grades. It suits performance sedans, sport crossovers, and the larger wheel fitments that get expensive fast in premium brands. If you are unsure what the letters after your size mean, our guide to tire speed ratings explains them.

Comanche: the truck and SUV side

The Comanche family steps up in four stages. H/T is the pavement highway tire for SUVs and half-ton pickups. A/T adds a more open tread for gravel and light trail work, in 10 ply LT sizes. R/T is the rugged terrain step with heavier ply ratings and 80 psi constructions. M/T is the dedicated mud tire, in 33 and 35 inch fitments on 20 and 22 inch wheels. Most of the truck range carries M+S branding and 500-A-B grades.

What the sidewall ratings actually tell you

Mohawk tires carry standard UTQG grades, the same system the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration requires on passenger tires. A grade like 500-A-A breaks down as treadwear, then traction, then temperature resistance.

Treadwear of 480 to 500 puts Mohawk in the middle of the field. It is not a long-life touring grade, and it is not a soft performance compound either. Traction grades of A and temperature grades of A or B are solid, ordinary results. These numbers are set through standardized testing, so they are one of the few genuinely comparable things you get across brands. To read the rest of your sidewall, see our guides on reading tire size and load index.

Warranty and road hazard coverage

Most Mohawk tires we list include a 50,000 mile treadwear warranty together with road hazard coverage. Road hazard is the part worth noticing, because it covers the damage that actually ends tires early: potholes, debris, and punctures outside the repairable area. Plenty of premium brands charge extra for that. Coverage is stated per product, so check the listing for the exact size you are buying.

Where Mohawk makes sense, and where it does not

Mohawk makes sense if you need four new tires now, your budget is real, and the alternative is stretching worn tires through another winter or buying used. New rubber with current tread and a road hazard policy beats worn premium tires on a wet road, every time. It also makes sense for large wheel fitments, where the price gap against a premium brand is widest.

It makes less sense if you want documented independent testing, a published manufacturer, or long tread life. Independent lab data on this brand is thin compared with the major names, the treadwear grades point to average mileage rather than exceptional, and the range has no dedicated winter tire, so drivers in real snow will still need a separate winter set.

Key takeaways

  • Mohawk does not publish who manufactures its tires, and claims linking it to the old Akron company are unverified.
  • Two families: Aegis for cars, Comanche for trucks and SUVs, six models in total.
  • Treadwear grades of 480 to 500 mean average tread life, not long life.
  • Most listings include a 50,000 mile warranty plus road hazard coverage, which is unusual at this price.
  • No dedicated winter model, so snow-belt drivers need a separate winter set.

The verdict

Mohawk is an honest value brand, not a bargain version of a premium one. The ratings are ordinary in the way ordinary is fine: A traction, mid-pack treadwear, normal construction. What lifts it above the cheapest tier is the warranty and road hazard coverage bundled at prices that start around $40. What holds it back is the missing manufacturer information and the thin independent testing record. If you are replacing worn tires on a budget, it is a sound buy. If you want a documented pedigree, spend more elsewhere. Either way, check your current tread first with our guide on how to check tire tread.
