Cosmo Tires Review: Who Makes Them, and Are They Any Good?

Cosmo is the brand with the cartoon cat and the tire names that sound like a wrestling card: Mucho Macho, El Jefe, El Tigre, Mud Kicker. It is easy to read that as a joke and move on. That would be a mistake, because behind the names is one of the wider value catalogues on the market, including one of the few budget tires built specifically for electric cars. Here is what Cosmo is, which lines are worth your money, and where it falls short.

Who makes Cosmo tires, and where are they made?

Cosmo is the private label of Tire Group International, usually shortened to TGI, a tire distributor headquartered in Miami, Florida, with distribution centers in Florida and Oregon. TGI describes itself as a distributor and manufacturer, and the family behind it says it has been in the tire business since 1942. The brand was relaunched with its current look, including the Kool Kat mascot, in 2017.

What Cosmo does not publish is a factory. The tires carry no country of manufacture on the product listing and TGI does not name the plants that build them, beyond saying its facilities hold an ISO 14001 environmental certification. That is normal at this tier and it is not a warning sign on its own, but you should know it before you buy. If knowing the factory matters to you, that is a fair reason to pick a brand that states it, and we would rather tell you that than invent one.

What can be verified is on the tire itself: the size, the load index and speed rating, the UTQG grades where they apply, and the DOT code that identifies the plant that built it. Every tire legally sold in the United States meets the same federal safety standards whatever name is on the sidewall. The rest of this review is built on what the tires actually are, not on the mascot.

The Cosmo lineup at a glance

RC-17 and Roadhunter: the everyday tires

The RC-17 is the plain all-season touring tire for ordinary cars, in 15 to 17 inch sizes at roughly $55 to $85. It carries a UTQG treadwear grade of 500 with A ratings for traction and temperature, and comes in H, V and W speed ratings. This is the line to look at for a Civic, a Corolla, a Camry or a Malibu that just needs four new tires.

The Roadhunter is the same idea for crossovers and SUVs, and it is the deepest line in the range. It runs from 14 inch all the way to 22 inch, carries a 560 A A grade with an M+S marking, and costs about $70 to $145. On a RAV4, a CR-V, a Highlander or an Explorer that lives on pavement, this is the Cosmo to compare against the premium names.

A word on those UTQG numbers, because the brand's product listings lean on them. Treadwear is an index from a controlled test course, assigned by the manufacturer, and it only compares tires from the same maker. A 560 tire is expected to wear more slowly than a 300 tire from Cosmo. It is not a promise of miles and it says nothing about how a Cosmo compares with a Michelin. Traction and temperature grades are the ones that carry real meaning across brands: A is the second-highest traction grade and the highest temperature grade, and every passenger line here holds A on both.

Mucho Macho and Tigertail: the performance side

Despite the name, Mucho Macho is a serious tire category: it is the ultra-high-performance line, with W and Y speed ratings, ZR sizes from 16 to 20 inch, and a treadwear grade of 300 A A. That low number is what you would expect from a soft, grippy compound, and it tells you the tire is built for a sporty sedan or coupe rather than for mileage. Prices run from about $65 to $140, which is a fraction of what the premium names charge for a Y-rated tire on a 20 inch wheel.

Be realistic about what a value performance tire buys. It will be quick and responsive when new, and the saving is proportionally biggest here because premium performance rubber is expensive. It will not match the premium brands on wet grip as the tread wears or on how long the compound stays sharp. If you are chasing the last tenth on a track day, this is not the tire. If you want a Y-rated tire on a daily-driven performance car without paying a premium price, it is a fair option.

Tigertail is a smaller performance touring line with a 360 A A grade, in a handful of 16 to 22 inch sizes, sitting between the RC-17 and the Mucho Macho on character.

Kurrent EV: the tire that makes Cosmo different

Very few value brands sell a tire built for electric vehicles, and the Kurrent EV is Cosmo's. It comes in 16 to 20 inch sizes, every one of them an XL extra-load fitment, with H and V speed ratings, an M+S marking, and a UTQG grade of 600 A A, the highest treadwear index on any Cosmo passenger tire. Prices run from about $70 to $140.

Why an EV tire at all? Electric cars are heavier than their combustion equivalents, they deliver full torque from a standstill, and without engine noise the tires become the loudest thing in the cabin. Tires marketed for EVs typically answer that with higher load ratings, a harder-wearing compound and quieter tread patterns. "EV tire" is a marketing description rather than a regulated category, so the things to check are the ones on the sidewall: the load index against your door placard, the speed rating, and the XL marking if your car requires it.

At the premium end, an EV tire can cost well over $200 a corner. That is where the Kurrent EV makes its case. If you drive a Model 3, a Bolt, an Ioniq or a Leaf and the original tires have worn out early, which is common on EVs, a set of Kurrent EVs, in a size your door placard calls for, is one of the cheapest ways to replace them with a tire that was at least designed with the weight in mind.

El Jefe, El Tigre, GripIt and Mud Kicker: the truck side

The El Jefe H/T is the highway truck and SUV tire, in 15 to 20 inch at about $70 to $130, with a 560 A A grade. Its LT sibling, the Jefe HTL+, adds 10-ply load range E sizes for trucks that tow. The El Tigre A/T is the all-terrain, in 15 to 20 inch at about $100 to $175, with a 540 A B grade on the passenger-metric sizes and LT 10-ply sizes alongside. The GripIt X/T sits between all-terrain and mud-terrain, in 17 to 22 inch LT sizes on a 10-ply casing. The Mud Kicker M/T is the full mud tire, in 16 to 22 inch including 33 inch flotation sizes, on a 12-ply casing at up to about $305.

One detail applies across all of these. The LT sizes carry no UTQG grade, because federal rules only require grading on passenger car tires and light truck tires are exempt. That is not a gap in Cosmo's data. If you are comparing an LT Cosmo against an LT tire from another brand, compare load range, ply rating and warranty, because treadwear grade does not exist on either.

Vans and trailers: one strong, one thin

The El Jefe Van range covers C-rated commercial van sizes, the 8-ply fitments in 13 to 16 inch that a delivery van or a small box truck runs, at about $65 to $110. Those sizes are often hard to source at any price, and Cosmo has them, which makes it worth a look for a fleet buyer.

The trailer side is a different story. Cosmo makes the Stray Kat ST trailer line, and people search for it, but at the time of writing we hold almost none of it. We would rather say that than send you to an empty shelf. What the warranty actually covers

Cosmo's warranty has two parts, both published by the manufacturer. Road hazard coverage runs for the first 25 percent of the tire's tread life or one year from purchase, whichever comes first. A separate limited mileage treadwear warranty applies to the named models, including the Mucho Macho, RC-17, Tigertail, El Jefe, Jefe HTL+, El Tigre and Mud Kicker, and it is prorated: a tire that wears out before the stated mileage is credited toward a replacement in proportion to the miles it delivered, not replaced free. The mileage figure differs by model and is printed on the warranty sheet and on our product listing for that size.

Read the exclusions before you count on any of it, but the road hazard part is genuinely useful at this price. A pothole that kills a $70 tire in its first months is otherwise a total loss.

Where Cosmo makes sense, and where it does not

It makes sense when you need four new tires and the premium price for your size is hard to justify, especially on a crossover or SUV where the Roadhunter covers almost every wheel diameter. It makes sense for an EV owner replacing worn originals, where the Kurrent EV is one of the few budget tires designed for the job. And it makes sense for awkward fitments: C-rated van sizes, 22 inch SUV sizes, LT flotation sizes for a lifted truck.

It does not make sense if you cover high annual mileage and care how a tire behaves at 30,000 miles rather than at 3,000. Premium touring tires wear more evenly, stay quieter and hold their wet grip longer as they wear, and those differences are real. It also does not make sense if you need a true winter tire; the M+S marking on several Cosmo lines is a tread-geometry standard, not a snow rating, and none of them carry the three-peak mountain snowflake. The verdict

Cosmo is a value brand that earns its place on range rather than on any single quality argument. The names are a gimmick, the catalogue is not: a touring line, a performance line, a real EV tire, a crossover tire in every diameter from 14 to 22 inch, a full truck range and commercial van sizes, all with road hazard coverage and honest UTQG grades on the passenger tires.
